Martin Goulding new columnist for Guitar Interactive Magazine http://martingoulding.com/martin-goulding-new-columnist-for-guitar-interactive-magazine/ http://martingoulding.com/martin-goulding-new-columnist-for-guitar-interactive-magazine/#comments Mon, 24 Feb 2014 01:56:53 +0000 admin http://martingoulding.com/?p=1052 I’m very pleased to announce that I have been invited to join Guitar Interactive magazine as monthly columnist. It gives me great honour to be on the team producing one of the worlds premier online guitar magazines, working alongside such great players as Tom Quayle and Rick Graham. The title of my column is ‘Modern Rock Techniques,’ and I’ll be starting in Issue 25 with a solo study i’ve named ‘Hard Rocker,’ inspired by players like  Steve Vai and Tony Macalpine, and which features a free downloadable hard-rock/metal style backing track. Then from Issue 26 onwards I’ll start breaking down the main techniques in the style, starting with a series of lessons concentrating on Legato playing, including tapping and sweeping techniques, combined as an overall legato-based style.

I took a trip over to the Lick Library/Guitar Interactive Magazine HQ in Romford, Essex for the first video recording session earlier this month, special thanks to Levi Clay, Kim, James and Rich for making me feel welcome. Great studio and camera/recording gear, a little more elaborate than what i’m used to in my own environment! I decided to take my Axe FX II and Ibanez J CRG-2 TB,  which I’ve just had a set of Bare Knuckle VH IIs and a 63 Veneer Board installed and which sounded great, although i used the bridge pick up only for the session to get a more cutting Vai-ish legato tone! After a full day session I managed to finish the solo study along with the first three legato lessons. Rock! The first article should be published in a month or so, stay tuned for news!

Yngwie Malmsteen Special Feature by Martin Goulding http://martingoulding.com/yngwie-malmsteen-special-feature-by-martin-goulding/ http://martingoulding.com/yngwie-malmsteen-special-feature-by-martin-goulding/#comments Sun, 08 Dec 2013 01:02:18 +0000 admin http://martingoulding.com/?p=1024 Back in July 2005, I was given the honour of interviewing one of my own main early influences, Yngwie Malmsteen. This was my first professional job for Guitar Techniques magazine and along with my good friend Charlie Griffiths who was writing for Total Guitar magazine, we met up with Yngwie at a hotel in Kensington, London, and spent a couple of hours talking guitar, and filming some incredible ‘off-the-cuff’ improv over some backing tracks i’d prepared.

The first solo 1 is based around the A harmonic minor/E Phrygian dominant sound, with Yngwie showcasing his trademark classically-influenced vocabulary of sweep arpeggios, alternate picked scale passages and screaming vibrato. The second solo 2 is played over a twelve bar progression in E, and is based around a Jimi Hendrix inspired vibe which Yngwie enjoys improvising over, often playing Spanish Castle Magic at his shows. This solo features some great E minor pentatonic playing, combined with some E Dorian and chromatic ideas, and demonstrates Yngwie’s hot rodded approach to the blues.

I’m pleased to present the un-edited video improvs for solos 1 and 2, along with solo transcriptions in Guitar Pro and PDF format, as well as the same backings Yngwie himself played over! (transposed down to E for convenience). Follow this link to go to the Special Features page, where you can see the lessons and download the whole package for free! Please remember to subscribe to my YouTube channel while you’re watching the videos! Rock!

Thrashed solo study now available from Live4guitar.com http://martingoulding.com/thrashed-solo-study-now-available-from-live4guitar-com/ http://martingoulding.com/thrashed-solo-study-now-available-from-live4guitar-com/#comments Sat, 07 Dec 2013 22:40:24 +0000 admin http://martingoulding.com/?p=999 My third solo study for Live4guitar.com, “Thrashed” is now available and can be previewed here on the marketplace for free! The full package includes fast and slow high definition video demonstrations, along with a 10 minute video breakdown/lesson. Also included is a high quality audio backing track with a set of midi versions at slower speeds, and with all tabs presented in Guitar Pro format as well as PDF’s.

This solo takes influence from the Thrash metal style, which gained popularity from the early-mid 1980s with bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Based around an uptempo 8th note feel with a choppy down-stroke riff, the solo combines some blues-based E minor pentatonic ideas, with some more modern sounding E Dorian 3-notes-per-string scalar runs. Throughout the solo there is an emphasis on accurate bending and wide vibrato, along with a focus on alternate picking, rapid fire pentatonic repetitions and legato. Gear wise, i used my Ibanez J Custom, which can be seen as the first guitar here on the gear page, going into the Axe-FX II and set up with a Brit Super (Marshall AFD100)/Tubescreamer type sound, with the Matrix GT1000FX poweramp and CFR12′s for monitoring. The sound also output from the Axe into an Apogee Ensemble soundcard straight to a mac running Logic. All video done with a Canon 60D and then into FCPX.

Dragon’s Fury neo-classical solo study now available from Live4guitar.com http://martingoulding.com/986/ http://martingoulding.com/986/#comments Sat, 07 Dec 2013 21:06:37 +0000 admin http://martingoulding.com/?p=986 My second solo study for Live4guitar.com, “Dragon’s Fury” is now available and can be previewed here on the marketplace for free! There is also a free lick which is available for download here! The full package includes fast and slow high definition video demonstrations, along with a 10 minute video breakdown/lesson. Also included is a high quality audio backing track with a set of midi versions at slower speeds, and with all tabs presented in Guitar Pro format as well as PDF’s.

This solo takes influence from the neo-classical rock style, which gained popularity from Yngwie Malmsteen’s groundbreaking 1984 debut, Rising Force. From the mid to late-1980s, this fast melodic style gained popularity on the guitar instrumental scene, with players such as Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine, Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman developing the new modern rock techniques to their highest levels. Based around the A harmonic minor scale/E Phrygian dominant mode, the solo features alternate picking and sweeping techniques along with an emphasis on accurate bending and vibrato. Gear wise, i used my customised Tokai 1984 Goldstar, which can be seen as the fifth guitar down here on the gear page, going into the Axe-FX II and set up with a Brit Super (Marshall AFD100)/Tubescreamer type sound, with the Matrix GT1000FX poweramp and CFR12′s for monitoring. The sound also output from the Axe into an Apogee Ensemble soundcard straight to a mac running Logic. All video done with a Canon 60D and then into FCPX.

Martin Goulding to release Modern Rock/Metal App for iPad http://martingoulding.com/martin-goulding-to-release-modern-rockmetal-app-for-ipad/ http://martingoulding.com/martin-goulding-to-release-modern-rockmetal-app-for-ipad/#comments Tue, 27 Aug 2013 15:22:12 +0000 admin http://martingoulding.com/?p=908 After finishing a year’s worth of work for Guitar World magazine in December 2012, writing the monthly “Last Licks” column which i enjoyed (special thanks to Jeff Kitts and all at the magazine), i decided to take a break to concentrate on some other projects and was soon approached by Leafcutter Studios with a view to producing a modern-rock/metal course/app especially for the Apple iPad format. No detail has been spared in presenting an effective and comprehensive course-like structure to this app, with over 25,000 words of technical and theoretical explanations for 20 full practice routines (each routine divided into 3 exercises) along with audio demonstrations, and with 20 corresponding licks presented in HD video. The licks are supported by a set of bespoke rock/metal/neo-classical style backing tracks. The app is interactive with full control over tempo and with a tab player that features a sample library recorded using my Ibanez J Custom J CRG-2 TB!. On the diagramatic side of things, all scales and modes are interactive and accessible in both the 5-postion (or CAGED/EDCAG!) system as well as the 7-position 3-notes-per-string format and with various toggles to switch from position to position or to view any position from any modal perspective. This has been a 6 month project and is based around my experience specialising in teaching the modern rock style over the last 20 years or so and with routines that are tried and tested in the field! If you are at an intermediate to advanced level and are looking for a complete course in developing the modern rock/metal style with in depth sections on the legato technique, 2 hand tapping, sweeping and alternate picking techniques along with the musical application of these techniques, then this course will systematically and progressively build your skill set. An essential educational aid for all guitar students and players who are looking to reach a higher level with their rock playing incorporating techniques and improvisational concepts in the style of the great modern rock/metal players including Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch, Randy Rhoads, Warren DeMartini, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine, Jason Becker, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Reb Beach and Joe Satriani. More news soon!

Guitar World “Last Licks” Video Lesson on Legato Licks by Martin Goulding http://martingoulding.com/guitar-world-last-licks-video-lesson-on-legato-licks-by-martin-goulding/ http://martingoulding.com/guitar-world-last-licks-video-lesson-on-legato-licks-by-martin-goulding/#comments Mon, 26 Aug 2013 23:22:54 +0000 admin http://martingoulding.com/?p=781 For the December 2012 edition of Guitar World magazine which features The Beatles on the front cover, I put together my back cover column “Last Licks” column, featuring five Legato runs. From the rapid-fire slurs of the 1970’s classic rock icons, to the birth of modern rock in the late 1970’s with players such as Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads, to the mid/late 1980’s virtuosos Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Richie Kotzen, legato playing has become a popular technique in rock guitar playing. Characterised by a fast, smooth tone, it provides contrast to the picking-based techniques, and will help develop fretting hand strength, stamina and accuracy.
Set your fretting hand with the thumb in the middle of the neck, and dropped low with plenty of space underneath, the index finger set fairly flat so as to mute any un-played strings. Stretch and reach for the notes, keeping the hand still and shaking off any tension as it arises. Memorise by playing through slowly until comfortable before applying speed.
For the audio I used an Axe FX II set up with a Marshall Brit 800 Mod type sound (boost set off) with TS808 tubescreamer overdrive with the drive set to half and some medium room reverb (stereo delay from logic on mixdown) and pseudo double tracking (doubling the track and delaying one side/panned hard left and right), straight to an Apogee ensemble card into a Mac Pro running Logic. For Video, a Canon 60D and FCP X for editing. Guitar wise, i used my Ibanez J Custom JCRG-2 TB with EMG pick-ups. (see gear page). The supporting video goes into some detail breaking down the examples in a way that will be accessible for intermediate level players.
