Death

Warning! A lot of players in this style have suffered r.s.i in their picking arms, so be warned that firstly for this column you should be fully warmed up, and secondly as you attempt slowly to learn these examples, you should remain relaxed in the arm and try to be aware of tension before it causes discomfort. The picking motion comes from the wrist and in this style is much lighter than you may think.

This example is a high octane riff that will highlight the picking hand. To reach the speed heard in the example will take slow memorisation first before speed can be considered a possibility. With the picking hand the motion will come from the wrist with no arm motion whatsoever. The angle of the pick should be slightly downward angled but with a clean attack on the notes, so watch out for any scraping noises. The strokes should be incredibly light and refined with minimal motion. Use alternate picking throughout including the eighth notes.
