After finishing a year’s worth of work for Guitar World magazine in December 2012, writing the monthly “Last Licks” column which i enjoyed (special thanks to Jeff Kitts and all at the magazine), i decided to take a break to concentrate on some other projects and was soon approached by Leafcutter Studios with a view to producing a modern-rock/metal course/app especially for the Apple iPad format. No detail has been spared in presenting an effective and comprehensive course-like structure to this app, with over 25,000 words of technical and theoretical explanations for 20 full practice routines (each routine divided into 3 exercises) along with audio demonstrations, and with 20 corresponding licks presented in HD video. The licks are supported by a set of bespoke rock/metal/neo-classical style backing tracks. The app is interactive with full control over tempo and with a tab player that features a sample library recorded using my Ibanez J Custom J CRG-2 TB!. On the diagramatic side of things, all scales and modes are interactive and accessible in both the 5-postion (or CAGED/EDCAG!) system as well as the 7-position 3-notes-per-string format and with various toggles to switch from position to position or to view any position from any modal perspective. This has been a 6 month project and is based around my experience specialising in teaching the modern rock style over the last 20 years or so and with routines that are tried and tested in the field! If you are at an intermediate to advanced level and are looking for a complete course in developing the modern rock/metal style with in depth sections on the legato technique, 2 hand tapping, sweeping and alternate picking techniques along with the musical application of these techniques, then this course will systematically and progressively build your skill set. An essential educational aid for all guitar students and players who are looking to reach a higher level with their rock playing incorporating techniques and improvisational concepts in the style of the great modern rock/metal players including Eddie Van Halen, George Lynch, Randy Rhoads, Warren DeMartini, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Tony Macalpine, Jason Becker, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Reb Beach and Joe Satriani.
